I once got called “puta” by a 12-year old on laundry day at the laundromat. Now, I don’t speak Spanish, but I know “whore” or “bitch” when I hear it… My outfit wasn’t that bad.

Just cut the sleeves and legs off whatever pj’s or somesuch you’re using for laundry day. That should raise an eyebrow or two.
As for discount shopping in New York, may I suggest the internet? You can send your clothes off with the Scot right in those ebay boxes.
